Pitta-Vata root-cause treatment — not just pain relief

Migraine is called Ardhavabhedaka in Ayurveda — a Pitta-dominant condition with Vata involvement, causing recurrent debilitating one-sided headaches. At Ayurvishwa Healthcare, Dr. Vishwas Ghatge (BAMS · MD Ayurveda) uses Nadi Pariksha to identify your specific dosha pattern and prescribe Ayurvedic treatment that reduces frequency, severity and duration of migraine attacks.

What is Migraine?

Migraine is a complex neurological condition characterised by recurrent episodes of severe, often one-sided headache — typically accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. It is far more than a bad headache. A single migraine episode can last between 4 and 72 hours and can be completely debilitating.

Migraine affects approximately 15% of the global population and is the second leading cause of disability worldwide. It is three times more common in women than men, often linked to hormonal changes. Despite its prevalence, conventional medicine treats migraine primarily with pain suppression — which does not address why the episodes keep occurring.

Ayurveda’s core insight: Every migraine episode is a symptom. The disease is the Pitta-Vata imbalance underneath. Treating only the episode — with painkillers or triptans — leaves the imbalance untouched.
Migraine treatment in Ayurveda medicine corrects the root — which is why frequency and severity reduce progressively over time.

The Four Phases of Migraine

Migraine typically progresses through up to four distinct phases. Recognising your pattern helps Dr. Ghatge map the Ayurvedic intervention to the right stage.

Common migraine symptoms

Common Migraine Triggers

In Ayurveda, triggers are viewed as Pitta-Vata aggravating factors — understanding your personal trigger pattern is part of the treatment plan at Ayurvishwa Healthcare.

Types of Migraine

Migraine in Ayurveda — Ardhavabhedaka

The Ayurvedic name for migraine — Ardhavabhedaka — translates precisely as “half-splitting pain” (Ardha = half, Avabhedaka = splitting/tearing). This perfectly describes the hallmark one-sided, splitting headache of migraine, documented in classical Ayurvedic texts thousands of years ago.

Headache due to Pitta (Pittaja Shirashoola) is the dominant pattern — characterised by burning, throbbing pain, heat sensitivity, nausea and light sensitivity, all classic Pitta expressions. Vata amplifies the neurological component — the aura, pulsating quality and erratic onset.

Why conventional treatment alone is insufficient: Painkillers and triptans interrupt the attack but do not address the Pitta-Vata pattern — which rebuilds and triggers the next episode. Migraine treatment in Ayurveda medicine corrects this pattern at the root — progressively reducing frequency with each month of sustained treatment.

How Nadi Pariksha Diagnoses Migraine

No two migraine patterns are identical. Nadi Pariksha at Ayurvishwa Healthcare identifies the specific Pitta-Vata ratio, the channels involved and any Ama accumulation — making every prescription genuinely personalised.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Migraine Headache at Ayurvishwa Healthcare

Migraine treatment in Ayurveda at Ayurvishwa Healthcare follows a multi-stage protocol — cooling Pitta, stabilising Vata, clearing Ama and strengthening the Manovaha srotas. Treatment is entirely personalised to your Nadi Pariksha findings.

  • Pitta shamana (Pitta pacification) — cooling formulations that reduce cranial inflammation, vascular instability and heat-sensitivity; the primary acute intervention for headache due to Pitta
  • Vata anulomana (Vata regulation) — medicines that normalise Prana Vata movement in the head, reducing the neurological component — aura, pulsating quality and erratic onset
  • Shiro chikitsa (head-specific treatment) — classical formulations specifically designed for cranial disorders; targets the Manovaha srotas and Tarpaka Kapha for head tissue nourishment
  • Ama pachana (toxin clearance) — in chronic migraine, Ama in the channels must be cleared first; otherwise Pitta-Vata shamana medicines will have limited effect
  • Mano chikitsa (mind-body balance) — emotional and stress-related triggers are addressed through specific mind-calming formulations and Pranayama guidance as part of the treatment plan
  • Ahara and Vihara (diet & lifestyle) — personalised Pitta-pacifying dietary guidance and daily routine adjustments to reduce known triggers based on your specific Prakruti

What to expect: Most patients with episodic migraine see a reduction in frequency and severity within 4–8 weeks. Chronic migraine takes longer — 3–6 months for significant improvement. The goal is progressive reduction over time, not immediate elimination in one treatment.

“Your migraine has a dosha pattern. Nadi Pariksha reveals it.”

Migraine treatment in Ayurveda addresses the root Pitta-Vata dosha imbalance — not just pain suppression during an attack. At Ayurvishwa Healthcare, Dr. Vishwas Ghatge uses Nadi Pariksha to identify your specific pattern (Ardhavabhedaka) and prescribes personalised Ayurvedic medicine to reduce frequency, severity and duration of migraine headaches progressively over time.

Ayurvedic treatment for migraine headache involves Pitta shamana (cooling formulations for headache due to Pitta), Vata anulomana (neurological stabilisation), Shiro chikitsa (head-specific medicines) and Ama pachana (toxin clearance in chronic cases). All prescriptions are personalised to your Nadi Pariksha findings and Prakruti.

Migraine treatment in Ayurveda medicine uses classical formulations that cool Pitta in the cranial region, stabilise Vata’s neurological contribution and nourish the Manovaha srotas (mind channels). Specific medicines are selected by Dr. Ghatge based on your Nadi Pariksha findings — the same presentation may require different medicines in different patients.

Headache due to Pitta (Pittaja Shirashoola) is characterised by burning, throbbing pain — often one-sided, worse in heat or bright light, accompanied by nausea and eye sensitivity. This closely maps to migraine headache. Excess Pitta in the head region creates cranial inflammation and vascular instability — the Ayurvedic root of migraine. Cooling Pitta through personalised medicine is the primary approach.

An ayurvedic doctor for migraine should have expertise in Nadi Pariksha to identify the specific Pitta-Vata pattern, depth of Ama involvement and any associated hormonal or digestive triggers. Dr. Vishwas Ghatge (BAMS · MD Ayurveda) at Ayurvishwa Healthcare has 15+ years of clinical experience treating migraine through Nadi Pariksha across 14 clinics in Maharashtra.

In Ayurveda, migraine (Ardhavabhedaka) is caused by aggravated Pitta creating cranial inflammation and heat, amplified by Vata which drives the neurological component — aura, throbbing quality and erratic pattern. Common Pitta-Vata aggravating triggers include stress, heat, fasting, irregular sleep, hormonal changes, spicy foods and excessive screen exposure.

Most episodic migraine patients see reduced frequency and severity within 4–8 weeks. Chronic migraine (15+ days per month) typically requires 3–6 months for significant improvement. Full stabilisation and long-term management is usually established over 6–12 months of consistent treatment.

Yes. Hormonal migraine — linked to menstrual cycle, PCOS or perimenopause — is treated at Ayurvishwa Healthcare by addressing both the Pitta-Vata migraine pattern and the underlying Apana Vata-Pitta hormonal imbalance simultaneously. Nadi Pariksha identifies both components — the treatment addresses both.

Yes — in most cases, Ayurvedic treatment can run alongside conventional migraine medicines. Disclose all medications to Dr. Ghatge during consultation. Do not discontinue prescribed medicines without the guidance of your treating neurologist. As Ayurvedic treatment reduces episode frequency, your neurologist may adjust conventional doses accordingly.

Yes. Ayurvishwa Healthcare offers both online and offline appointments. Online consultations are conducted via video call by Dr. Vishwas Ghatge. Medicines are prescribed post-consultation and dispensed from your nearest Ayurvishwa Healthcare clinic.
