Natural removal without surgery — rooted in Nadi Pariksha

Kidney stones (called Mutrashmari in Ayurveda) form from a Pitta-Vata imbalance and Ama accumulation in the urinary tract. At Ayurvishwa Healthcare, Dr. Vishwas Ghatge (BAMS · MD Ayurveda) uses Nadi Pariksha to identify the exact metabolic pattern — prescribing personalised Ayurvedic treatment to dissolve stones, relieve pain and prevent recurrence.

What are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones (renal calculi) are hard mineral deposits that form inside the kidneys when urine becomes too concentrated. Minerals and salts crystallise and stick together, creating stones ranging in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. They can affect any part of the urinary tract — kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra.

Kidney stones affect approximately 12% of the Indian population at some point in their lives, with a high recurrence rate — 50% of people who have one stone will develop another within 5–10 years if the root metabolic cause is not addressed. This recurrence problem is precisely where Ayurvedic treatment through Nadi Pariksha has its greatest value.

Key distinction: Conventional treatment removes or breaks the existing stone. Ayurvedic treatment through Nadi Pariksha at Ayurvishwa Healthcare corrects the metabolic imbalance that created the stone — addressing both the existing stone and preventing the next one from forming.

Kidney Stone Symptoms

Symptoms depend on stone size and location. Small stones may pass without symptoms. Larger stones or those obstructing urine flow cause severe symptoms:

Seek emergency care immediately: if kidney stone pain is accompanied by fever and chills (sign of infection), complete inability to urinate, or persistent vomiting. These are urgent medical situations that require hospital management before any Ayurvedic consultation.

Types of Kidney Stones

Stone composition determines Ayurvedic classification and treatment. Knowing your stone type (from an ultrasound or previous analysis) helps Dr. Ghatge prescribe more precisely.

Kidney Stones in Ayurveda — Mutrashmari

In Ayurveda, kidney stones are called Mutrashmari (Mutra = urine, Ashmari = stone) or Vrukka Ashmari (kidney stone specifically). The Sushruta Samhita describes four types of Ashmari corresponding to the three doshas — Vataja, Pittaja and Kaphaja Ashmari — plus Shukraja (rare).

The Ayurvedic understanding of stone formation: Pitta excess concentrates urinary minerals and creates heat that crystallises them; Vata imbalance disrupts normal urinary flow; and Ama accumulation provides the sticky matrix that binds crystals into stones. All three factors require simultaneous correction.

Why kidney stones keep recurring — the Ayurvedic explanation

Agni dysfunction — impaired digestive fire creates Ama that circulates through the body and deposits in the kidneys and urinary tract, forming the stone matrix

Mutravaha srotas vitiation — the urinary channel system becomes impaired, reducing normal mineral clearance and increasing crystal precipitation

Pitta aggravation — excess heat in the body (from diet, climate, stress) concentrates urine and promotes mineral crystallisation

Prakruti susceptibility — Pitta-dominant Prakruti individuals are inherently more prone to kidney stone formation and require personalised preventive management

Key distinction: Conventional treatment removes or breaks the existing stone. Ayurvedic treatment through Nadi Pariksha at Ayurvishwa Healthcare corrects the metabolic imbalance that created the stone — addressing both the existing stone and preventing the next one from forming.

How Nadi Pariksha Guides Kidney Stone Treatment

Nadi Pariksha goes beyond confirming the presence of a stone — it reveals the metabolic pattern that created it, guiding treatment that addresses both the existing stone and the root cause.

Ayurvedic Kidney Stone Treatment at Ayurvishwa Healthcare

Kidney stone Ayurvedic treatment (Mutrashmari chikitsa) at Ayurvishwa Healthcare follows a structured approach based on the Nadi Pariksha findings — covering both immediate stone management and long-term recurrence prevention.

Shula hara (pain relief) — specific formulations that relax ureteric spasm and reduce Pitta inflammation, often providing relief within days of starting treatment

Ashmari bhedana (stone dissolution) — classical Ayurvedic formulations that support reduction in stone size and facilitate natural passage for eligible stone sizes

Mutravaha srotas shodhana (urinary channel cleansing) — clearing Ama and improving urinary flow to support natural stone elimination

Pitta-Vata shamana (dosha correction) — correcting the metabolic imbalance that caused stone formation — the most important step for preventing recurrence

Ahara chikitsa (therapeutic diet) — Prakruti-matched dietary guidance identifying foods that aggravate Pitta and contribute to stone formation in your specific constitution

STONE SIZE AYURVEDIC APPROACH SURGERY LIKELY NEEDED?
Under 4mm High chance of natural passage with Ayurvedic support — Ashmari bhedana medicines and hydration protocol Usually not
4mm – 7mm Ayurvedic medicines to reduce size and facilitate passage — combined with pain management and close monitoring Sometimes
7mm – 10mm Ayurvedic medicines may support passage, particularly for uric acid stones (most responsive to dissolution). Concurrent medical monitoring advised Possible
Over 10mm Conventional intervention (ESWL or ureteroscopy) recommended first — Ayurvedic treatment then addresses root cause and prevents recurrence Often yes
Any size with obstruction or infection Emergency conventional treatment first. Ayurvedic treatment begins post-acute phase Yes — urgent

The best kidney stones treatment addresses both the existing stone and the metabolic root cause. At Ayurvishwa Healthcare, Dr. Vishwas Ghatge uses Nadi Pariksha to identify the specific Pitta-Vata pattern and Ama accumulation driving stone formation — prescribing personalised Ayurvedic medicines for dissolution, pain relief and long-term recurrence prevention.

Kidney stone treatment without surgery is possible for most stones below 8–10mm, depending on type and location. Ayurvedic treatment supports natural stone passage and dissolution. Stones over 10mm, those causing urinary obstruction, or those with infection typically require conventional intervention first — Ayurvedic treatment then prevents regrowth.

Kidney stone ayurvedic treatment (Mutrashmari chikitsa) involves personalised oral Ayurvedic formulations to dissolve or reduce stones, relieve kidney stone pain, clear urinary channel Ama and correct the Pitta-Vata imbalance causing stone formation. All prescriptions are given after Nadi Pariksha assessment at Ayurvishwa Healthcare.

Ayurvedic treatment for kidney stone pain focuses on reducing ureteric spasm, calming aggravated Vata, reducing Pitta-related inflammation, and improving urinary flow. Many patients experience gradual symptom relief while the broader treatment works on reducing recurrence risk.

Ayurvedic treatment supports kidney stone removal through classical Ashmari Bhedana approaches that help reduce stone size and encourage natural elimination through the urinary tract. Treatment effectiveness depends on stone size, type, location, hydration, and metabolic condition.

    Common kidney stone symptoms include:

Severe pain in the back, side, or lower abdomen
    Pain radiating toward the groin
    Burning during urination
    Blood in urine
    Frequent urge to urinate
    Nausea or vomiting
    Difficulty passing urine

Immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms include fever, chills, or inability to urinate.

Ayurveda aims not only to manage existing stones but also to reduce recurrence risk. By addressing digestive imbalance, urinary metabolism, hydration habits, dietary triggers, and Pitta-Vata imbalance, long-term recurrence prevention becomes part of the treatment approach.

Treatment duration depends on stone size, type, chronicity, and overall health condition:

    • Small stones may pass within weeks
    • Medium stones may require several months
    • Metabolic correction and prevention protocols often continue for 3–6 months

A personalised consultation provides the most accurate estimate.

According to Ayurveda, kidney stones (Mutrashmari) develop due to imbalance of Pitta and Vata doshas along with Ama accumulation in the urinary system. Poor digestion, dehydration, improper diet, metabolic disorders, and lifestyle factors may contribute to stone formation.

Ayurvedic treatment is commonly used alongside conventional care when supervised properly. Patients should disclose all medications and treatments during consultation. In cases involving infection, severe obstruction, or emergency symptoms, conventional medical treatment should take priority before supportive Ayurvedic care begins.
