What are Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones (renal calculi) are hard mineral deposits that form inside the kidneys when urine becomes too concentrated. Minerals and salts crystallise and stick together, creating stones ranging in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. They can affect any part of the urinary tract — kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra.

Kidney stones affect approximately 12% of the Indian population at some point in their lives, with a high recurrence rate — 50% of people who have one stone will develop another within 5–10 years if the root metabolic cause is not addressed. Types of Kidney Stones

Kidney Stones in Ayurveda — Mutrashmari

In Ayurveda, kidney stones are called Mutrashmari (Mutra = urine, Ashmari = stone) or Vrukka Ashmari (kidney stone specifically). The Sushruta Samhita describes four types of Ashmari corresponding to the three doshas — Vataja, Pittaja and Kaphaja Ashmari — plus Shukraja (rare).
